Press Release, November 2020
Gartner has released a new October 2020 report “Emerging Technologies and Trends Impact Radar: Devices”. In this new research, “Gartner identifies 18 technologies and trends that product leaders must evaluate and determine their potential impact on devices”. Specifically, it recognizes the significant impact of Location Tracking on the current market, which shows a surge of contact tracing and social distancing apps and wearables due to Covid-19 pandemic. Actility is recognized in the report as one of the Sample Vendors of such solutions, as it offers a Proximity Detection & Contact Tracing for Covid-19 and other IoT asset tracking solutions using Abeeway devices.
“The objective of this Gartner research is to provide technology and service providers with basic intelligence on how emerging technologies and trends are evolving. Vendors can leverage this knowledge/understanding to determine which are most important to their business and when it makes sense to advance their products and services by investing in them”.
According to the report, “location tracking has a high impact as demand from location tracking products from nearly every industry, including the public sector. Using location tracking to prevent the loss of an asset, as well as the additional ability to manage capacity in a building, help with desk and room booking, and monitor cleaning and hand hygiene, is likely to be needed years after the current crisis”. “Emerging Technologies and Trends Impact Radar (figure below) content analyzes and illustrates two significant aspects of impact — when Gartner expects it to have a significant impact on the market (namely, the range); and how big of an impact it has on relevant markets (specifically, mass). Each emerging technology or trend profile analysis is composed of these two aspects. Location tracking is at the Now range as Gartner has seen continued demand for asset and people tracking. Because of this current trend, Gartner expects location tracking customer adoption to grow 30% more year over year in 2020 than in previous years.”
The reports specifies that, “there are a wide range of technologies enabling real-time location tracking in indoor and outdoor environments, including GPS, Bluetooth low energy (BLE), Wi-Fi (including different frequencies and technologies, 2.4GHz, 900MHz, etc.), ultrawideband (UWB), sensor fusion, infrared (IR) and visible light communication (VLC). With the COVID-19 pandemic, contact tracing and social distancing apps and wearables have surged in the last three months. By using peer-to-peer Bluetooth proximity detection, wearables can warn the user to keep their distance to others, for example, in the workplace. Smartphones can follow the same approach and the location information sent to the central system can then be used to backtrace users in case someone reports a COVID-19 infection.”
According to Actility, the BLE-based proximity detection, augmented with LoRaWAN® low-power connectivity, is even more efficient: the data about those encouters is transmitted via long range, ultra-low power LoRaWAN® wireless network on private or public infrastructure through Actility’s ThingPark platform, providing low cost connectivity & low Total Cost of Ownership.
