Press Release, Paris and Camarillo, Oct. 20, 2020
Actility and Semtech announce the market entry of “LR1110 LoRa Edge™ Evaluation Kit” with a tracking device based on the new generation Semtech’s LR1110 chipset and Actility’s LoRaWAN® network management expertise. The solution delivers ultra-low power meter-accurate positioning both indoors and outdoors. The kit allows solution providers and integrators to quickly evaluate this new technology and to easily experience how it significantly reduces the cost and complexity of building a solution for locating and monitoring IoT assets.
Semtech’s advanced LR1110 chipset, integrated to LoRa Edge™, is using assisted GNSS and WiFi AP scanning, alongside standard LoRaWAN communications. It’s bundled with Actility’s LoRaWAN network server – the ThingPark Platform – and with Tago.io Application Server, as part of a complete Asset Management Evaluation Kit, available on ThingPark Market, the biggest IoT B2B marketplace. The chipset has already been adapted by multiple companies such as Abeeway for its newest Geolocation Module.
Semtech recently introduced the first product in its new LoRa Edge™ platform – a highly versatile and low power, software-defined LoRa®-based platform that will enable a wide portfolio of applications for indoor and outdoor asset management. The first product of the platform is the game changing LoRa Edge™ multi-technology asset management solution: LR1110. Its key market differentors are:
As a leader in LoRaWAN network management solutions, Actility provides necessary elements for the frictionless experience of this Asset Management Evaluation Kit.
Actility provides the connectivity layer, powered by its Enterprise-grade LoRaWAN network server: ThingPark Enterprise. ThingPark Enterprise is the leading LoRaWAN private networking solution, managing over 35,000 commercial gateways worldwide. It streamlines your digital transformation, eliminating wiring for most sensors, enabling indoor/outdoor tracking and many other use cases.
ThingPark Enterprise allows to deploy a dedicated and fully controlled LoRaWAN network, connecting your ThingPark Ready gateways, for a fast use case enablement. All components of the network, including sensors, gateways and data routing are managed from a unique and easy-to-use user interface. The ThingPark Enterprise allows full flexibility in the choice of gateways or devices. It is also a flexible, scalable and secure allowing to start with a Proof-of-concept and scale to full deployments.
ThingPark Community, as the TPE-based community platform, provides free of charge access to Actility’s ThingPark Enterprise platform to community users for their non-profit use, including using this Evaluation Kit and other solutions.
ThingPark Exchange – Actility’s Peering Hub already connecting 18 LoRaWAN® networks worldwide, public & private – ensures seamless integration of ThingPark Community Platform with Semtech’s Join Server in this case. Through its integration with the ThingPark Exchange, Semtech Join Server can serve any LR1110-based trackers across the globe without additional integration when the trackers are using a ThingPark Exchange connected networks (which includes both ThingPark and non-ThingPar k networks)
ThingPark Enterprise finally delivers the data to Tago.io through a pre-defined interface. Tago.ai provides mechanism for customers to route received location data to actionable dashboard to get the map location history, the data traffic history and many other things.
Asset tracking is one of the most promising applications for the Internet of Things (IoT). A variety of industries, such as transportation, logistics, healthcare, and food services, are investing in smarter technologies to replace siloed legacy systems with automated asset management solutions. Actility-Semtech Asset Management Evaluation Kit for LR1110 LoRa Edge is one of such, as it is capable of GNSS scanning and Wi-Fi AP passive scanning, enabling indoor and outdoor localization alike at very low power consumption.
The tracking scenarios can be different: simple indoor, outdoor-to-indoor and vice-versa. When a customer monitors a product or asset in transit from one location to another but wants to continue tracking the items when they arrive into a warehouse or other indoor location. By combining GPS scanning and Wi-Fi scanning, the platform provides for the seamless and automatic switch from GPS scanning outdoors to Wi-Fi scanning in a building using a single LR1110 device without need for any human intervention, maintaining consistent visibility of asset locations.
In the indoor-only scenario, tracking use cases include boxes or pallets in a warehouse, expensive power tools in a construction zone, asset recovery for underutilized medical equipment in hospitals, or even geofencing (creating a virtual boundary around a specific geographic location) for high-value retail assets within a store environment. Here the LR1110-based trackers enable low power tracking of asset location in building for months or even years on a single battery or charge, while maintaining the flexibility to switch to GPS scanning should the asset leave the building or geofenced zone.
